What a Multi-Location Maternity DNA Test Does
A maternity DNA test compares genetic markers between an alleged biological mother and a child to determine whether they share a biological mother-child relationship. The multi-location configuration ships two collection kits, one to each of the two U.S. addresses provided on the order. Participants collect cheek swabs at their respective locations. Each location returns its participants' individually labeled samples and completed forms, and the laboratory links the two shipments to one coordinated case.
When Maternity Testing Is the Right Choice
Maternity testing is less common than paternity testing because there's usually no doubt about who gave birth to a child. The most common scenarios where it's needed:
- Adopted children searching for or reconnecting with a birth mother.
- Immigration cases requiring biological documentation of the mother-child relationship.

When maternity is confirmed, results typically show 99.999% or higher probability. When maternity is excluded, exclusion is 100%. The multi-location logistics don't affect the science, only the shipping.
When to Choose a Legal Maternity Test Instead
This kit is for informational use only. If the result may be used for immigration documentation, custody proceedings, or estate matters, a legal chain-of-custody maternity test is required. Legal testing involves witnessed collection with photo identification and a documented chain of custody, which cannot be done through a multi-location home kit.
