DNA Testing: Your Top Questions Answered

Clear Answers to Your Most Common DNA Testing Questions

DNA testing can feel overwhelming at first, especially when you are trying to understand accuracy, privacy, shipping, sample collection, turnaround times, and which test is right for your family situation.

At My Forever DNA®, we believe customers deserve clear answers before they order. Whether you are considering a paternity DNA test, maternity test, sibling test, grandparent test, discreet DNA test, or another relationship DNA test, our goal is to make the process feel simple, private, and supported from beginning to end.

This guide answers some of the most common DNA testing questions we receive. For an even deeper list of answers, visit our full DNA Testing FAQ Guide. If you come across a term you do not recognize, our DNA Testing From A to Z Glossary can help explain common DNA testing words in a simple, easy-to-understand way.

Can DNA Test Kits Be Shipped to Multiple Locations?

Yes. My Forever DNA® can ship DNA collection kits to multiple locations when participants live in different homes, cities, states, or countries.

This is especially helpful for:

  • Paternity DNA testing when the alleged father and child live separately
  • Sibling, grandparent, aunt, uncle, or maternity testing when family members are in different places
  • Situations where collecting samples together is uncomfortable or not practical
  • Private family testing where convenience and confidentiality matter

Each participant’s samples are identified and matched carefully, helping ensure the laboratory can process the correct samples together. If you need this option, explore our multiple-location home DNA test kits.

How Long Can DNA Samples Be Stored Before Shipping?

For best results, we recommend returning your DNA samples as soon as possible after collection. Proper storage matters because moisture, heat, contamination, and improper packaging may affect sample quality.

In most cases, collected cheek swab samples should be stored in the provided paper sample envelope. Do not place DNA samples in plastic bags, including Ziploc bags, because plastic can trap moisture and may compromise the sample.

If you have already collected your sample and are unsure whether it is still acceptable, contact our team before shipping it in.

How Fast Will My DNA Test Kit Arrive?

Most physical My Forever DNA® kits are shipped quickly and include tracking for peace of mind. Delivery timing can vary depending on when the order is placed, weekends, holidays, shipping location, and the specific testing option selected.

Many kits include:

  • Easy-to-follow collection instructions
  • Sterile cheek swabs
  • DNA sample envelopes
  • Result notification information
  • Return shipping materials when applicable

If you need to begin sooner or you are ordering from outside the United States, a digital home DNA test kit may be a helpful option because you can access the collection instructions without waiting for a physical kit to arrive.

How Accurate Are At-Home DNA Tests?

At-home DNA testing can be highly accurate when samples are collected properly, submitted correctly, and processed by a qualified laboratory.

My Forever DNA® focuses on accuracy, privacy, and customer support so customers can feel more confident throughout the process. Depending on the relationship test ordered, testing may analyze different numbers of genetic markers to help support strong relationship analysis.

What Comes Inside a DNA Test Kit?

Most My Forever DNA® home DNA test kits include everything needed to collect and return cheek swab samples for laboratory testing.

A typical kit may include:

  • Step-by-step DNA collection instructions
  • Sterile buccal cheek swabs
  • Individual sample envelopes
  • Result notification form or instructions
  • Return shipping materials when applicable

The collection process is simple, non-invasive, and designed to be completed at home. If you are new to DNA testing, our DNA Testing FAQ Guide is a helpful place to review common questions before getting started.

Do You Offer Discreet or Secret DNA Testing?

Yes. My Forever DNA® offers discreet DNA testing options using alternative samples when a standard cheek swab is not possible or preferred.

Alternative DNA samples may include items such as:

  • Toothbrushes
  • Hair with the root attached
  • Fingernail clippings
  • Earwax swabs
  • Chewing gum
  • Cigarette butts
  • Other possible personal items that may contain DNA

It is important to understand that DNA cannot be guaranteed from every alternative sample. Sample viability may depend on the type of item, age of the sample, storage conditions, handling, contamination, and whether enough usable DNA is present.

Can DNA Testing Be Done Internationally?

In many situations, yes. My Forever DNA® can support customers in different locations, including international participants, depending on the test type and shipping needs.

For customers outside the United States, a digital DNA test option may be helpful because it allows you to begin the collection process without waiting for a physical kit to be shipped internationally.

If you are ordering from outside the United States or need participants in different countries tested together, contact us before ordering so we can help guide you toward the best option.

Can a Newborn Baby Be Tested?

Yes. A newborn baby can be tested using a gentle cheek swab collection method. The swab is rubbed inside the cheek to collect cells for DNA testing.

The process is simple, non-invasive, and commonly used for babies, children, teens, and adults.

Can a Paternity Test Be Done Without the Mother?

Yes. In many informational paternity DNA tests, the mother is not required to participate. The child and alleged father can often be tested directly.

However, including the mother’s sample may sometimes provide additional context depending on the situation. If you are unsure which option is best, our team can help explain your choices before you order.

You can view available options in our paternity DNA testing collection.

How Long Does It Take to Receive DNA Test Results?

Turnaround time depends on the test type, sample type, shipping time, and when the laboratory receives all required samples. Many standard relationship DNA tests are processed quickly after the lab receives the samples, but timing may vary.

Alternative or discreet DNA samples may take longer because the lab must first determine whether usable DNA is present before comparison testing can be completed.

For the most accurate timeline for your specific test, review the product details or contact My Forever DNA® before ordering.

Is My DNA Information Private?

Privacy is one of the most important parts of the DNA testing experience. At My Forever DNA®, we understand that relationship testing can involve sensitive family questions, personal emotions, and private information.

Our customer-first approach is built around confidentiality, real human support, and helping you feel informed instead of overwhelmed. You can also review our Trust & Transparency Statement for more information about how we approach customer trust.

What Is the Difference Between At-Home DNA Testing and Legal DNA Testing?

At-home DNA tests are typically used for personal knowledge. They can help families privately understand biological relationships, but they are generally not intended for court use.

Legal DNA testing requires a documented chain-of-custody process, identity verification, and approved sample collection procedures. If you need DNA test results for custody, child support, immigration, birth certificate changes, inheritance, or another legal matter, you may need a legal DNA test instead of a standard at-home test.

If you are unsure which type of test you need, contact us before ordering so we can help explain the difference.

What If I Do Not Understand a DNA Testing Term?

DNA testing can come with unfamiliar terms like buccal swab, genetic markers, chain of custody, probability of paternity, alleged father, inclusion, exclusion, and alternative sample.

Instead of leaving you to figure everything out alone, we created a helpful DNA Testing From A to Z Glossary so you can better understand common DNA testing language before, during, and after your test.

This is especially helpful if you are comparing test types, reading product descriptions, reviewing your results, or trying to understand the difference between informational and legal DNA testing.
