Sometimes the people available to test are the possible siblings themselves. A sibling DNA test can show if the genetic evidence is most consistent with full siblings, half siblings, or no biological sibling relationship.

Collection is completed at home with painless cheek swabs. The laboratory compares 46 DNA genetic markers plus Amelogenin, and required samples are dual processed before results are released. Standard results are typically ready within 2 to 3 business days after all samples and forms have been received, accepted, and placed into laboratory processing.

Sibling testing is an indirect relationship test. The result is statistical because the laboratory is comparing DNA shared through one or both parents instead of comparing a child directly with a parent.

Full Siblings and Half Siblings

Full siblings share both biological parents. Half siblings share one biological parent. The laboratory evaluates which proposed relationship is better supported by the DNA from the people tested.

Sibling testing can help two people who know they have the same biological mother and want to learn if they also share the same biological father. It can also help possible siblings reconnect when the parent linking them is unavailable.

A half-sibling result does not identify the shared parent by itself. The family information supplied with the case helps give the result its proper context.

Should You Choose a Sibling Test or a Parentage Test?

If the biological parent in question can provide a sample, a direct paternity test or maternity test will usually give a clearer answer. Choose sibling testing when that parent cannot participate and the possible siblings are available.

Two people can complete a sibling test without either parent. In some families, adding a known biological parent provides more useful genetic information. For example, including the known mother may strengthen a comparison between people investigating a possible shared father.

If a parent or another possible sibling can take part, tell us before you order. We can confirm if that extra sample is likely to help instead of adding someone who will not improve the analysis.

Standard, Multi-Location, and DIY Sibling Testing

• Choose the standard kit when the participants can collect cheek swabs at the same location.

• Choose the multi-location kit when they live at two different U.S. addresses and need separate materials connected under one case.

• Choose the DIY digital test when you want the instructions electronically and plan to provide the approved collection and mailing supplies.

If one person cannot provide a cheek swab, an approved personal item may be considered through our discreet DNA testing options. Confirm the item before ordering, especially if it is unusual or cannot be replaced.

How to Complete a Sibling DNA Test at Home

1. Order the test for the relationship you want the laboratory to evaluate.

2. Collect and label a cheek-swab sample from each participant.

3. Return all required samples and completed forms.

4. Receive the statistical relationship report privately by email.

An inconclusive result is possible when the available DNA does not provide enough information to distinguish the proposed relationships clearly. This does not automatically mean the collection was done incorrectly. A parent or another close relative may be able to add useful information in a follow-up comparison.

When Families Use Sibling DNA Testing

Sibling testing can help with:

• A possible full-sibling or half-sibling relationship after adoption or separation.

• A possible shared father when the same mother is already known.

• A family connection discovered through records or consumer ancestry matching.

• A long-standing relationship question when the connecting parent is unavailable or deceased.

The test evaluates the genetic relationship. It does not determine legal parentage or explain the family history behind the result.

Personal Results and Legal Sibling Testing

A self-collected sibling test is for personal knowledge. Official matters require verified identity, witnessed collection, and documented chain of custody.
