At-Home DNA Testing with Alternative Samples

A cheek swab is the best starting sample for most relationship DNA tests. If a cheek swab is unavailable, a personal item may still contain enough DNA for testing.

Our discreet DNA testing options can use approved items such as a used toothbrush, rooted hair, or nail clippings. The laboratory first tries to recover a complete DNA profile from the item. If the extraction is successful, that profile can be used for the paternity, maternity, sibling, grandparent, aunt or uncle, or twin zygosity analysis you selected.

Discreet testing does not remove consent or authorization requirements. You are responsible for confirming that every sample can be collected and submitted lawfully in your jurisdiction.

Choose the Relationship and the Sample

There are two separate parts to the order:

1. The relationship test: This tells the laboratory which people to compare and which biological relationship to evaluate.

2. The sample type: This tells the laboratory how DNA needs to be extracted from each participant's submission.

The participants can provide different sample types. One person may use a standard cheek swab while another submits an approved personal item. Testing can move forward after a usable DNA profile has been recovered from everyone required for the relationship comparison.

If you are uncertain about the relationship test itself, tell us who is available before ordering. A good sample will not answer the right question if the wrong family comparison is selected.

Which Alternative DNA Samples Are Most Useful?

No personal item comes with a guaranteed DNA recovery rate. The chance of success depends on how the item was used, stored, and handled.

• Used toothbrush: Often a strong option because regular use can leave many cheek cells. It should have been used by one person and allowed to dry.

• Hair with intact roots: Rooted strands may contain the nuclear DNA needed for relationship testing. Cut hair and strands without roots are much less useful.

• Fresh nail clippings: These may provide usable DNA when they come from one person and are kept clean and dry.

• Other personal items: Some can be evaluated, but unusual items should be confirmed with us before they are sent.

Items that were washed, sanitized, stored while damp, shared, or handled by several people carry a higher risk of failure or mixed DNA. If you have more than one possible item, we can help you choose which one gives the case a better starting point.

How to Protect an Alternative Sample

Keep the item dry and handle it as little as possible. Package each person's sample separately in a clean paper envelope, or follow the instructions supplied with your order. Avoid sealed plastic when it could trap moisture.

An older item can still work if it remained dry and protected. A newer sample can fail after washing, moisture exposure, heat, or contact with other people. The condition of the item matters more than its age alone.

Shipped Discreet Test or DIY Digital Instructions

Choose a shipped test if you want physical materials and printed instructions sent in plain packaging. Choose a DIY digital DNA test if you want the instructions electronically and plan to provide the approved packaging and mailing supplies yourself.

Both choices lead to the same laboratory testing. The difference is how you receive the instructions and prepare the samples for mailing. Contact us before ordering if the participants also live at separate addresses so we can connect the sample types and shipping details correctly.

What Happens at the Laboratory?

1. The laboratory evaluates the item and attempts DNA extraction.

2. The recovered profile is checked for quality and completeness.

3. If usable DNA is obtained from all required participants, the relationship analysis begins.

4. Results are delivered privately by email after testing is complete.

Alternative-sample cases typically require about 5 to 7 business days of laboratory processing after the required samples are received and accepted. Shipping and any recollection time are separate.

Once a complete profile is recovered, the relationship analysis is not inherently less accurate because the DNA came from a personal item. The uncertainty is at the extraction stage. Some items do not contain enough clean DNA to work.

If an item does not produce a usable profile, another sample may be needed. Additional extraction work may involve another laboratory charge. We will contact you before any additional testing or charge is approved.

Personal Use, Consent, and Privacy

Privately collected alternative samples are for personal knowledge. Official use requires verified identities, witnessed collection, and documented chain of custody. Review our legal DNA testing options before collection if the result may be needed for court, child support, custody, immigration, inheritance, or another official matter.

We keep the process private from sample submission through result delivery. Customer DNA data is not sold, and consumer DNA profiles are not uploaded to ancestry, genealogy, or law-enforcement databases. Physical samples are destroyed after testing according to laboratory protocol. Results arrive by email without an online customer portal or kit activation process.
