What this test is for
This is the most private option we offer for paternity testing. It combines two things: DIY digital delivery, which means no kit ships to your home, and alternative sample flexibility, which means you don't need to collect a cheek swab from either the alleged father or the child. You can submit any accepted alternative DNA sample (a used toothbrush, hair with the root attached, nail clippings, chewed gum, earwax on a swab, a used razor) from one or both participants.
Which alternative samples work and which don't
Ranked from most reliable to least reliable in typical conditions:
-
Used toothbrush (20+ uses, used only by the person being tested): highest yield.
-
Hair with the root or follicle attached, 25 to 50 strands: reliable when roots are intact. Cut hair without roots does not work.
-
Nail clippings, 5 to 10 pieces: reliable when clean and dry.
-
Earwax on a cotton swab: works but yields less DNA.
-
Chewed sugar-free gum: works when fresh and stored dry.
-
Used razor (electric brush head or disposable): captures skin cells and hair with roots.
-
Dental floss picks, used tissues, cigarette filters: possible under the right conditions, higher variability.
Water bottles, cups, utensils, and breast milk are not accepted because they rarely contain enough usable DNA and often carry contamination from other people.
Extra lab fees on alternative sample DIY orders
Each alternative sample submitted in place of a cheek swab requires forensic viability review before the paternity comparison can run. The added lab fee covers that review, which is where the extra cost comes from. Fees vary based on the exact configuration you order (one alternative sample plus one cheek swab, two alternative samples, or an additional replacement sample if the first one doesn't yield enough DNA). If the initial sample fails viability, your specialist contacts you before any additional charge is added.
