At-Home Twin DNA Tests | Identical or Fraternal Twins

Twin Zygosity DNA Test Kits for Identical or Fraternal Twins

Twins can look very similar and still be fraternal. They can also have separate placentas and be identical. If appearance, birth records, or an early assumption left the question open, a twin zygosity DNA test can provide a clear answer.

Each twin provides a painless cheek-swab sample at home. Our AABB-accredited U.S. laboratory partner compares 24 DNA genetic markers plus Amelogenin. Required samples are dual processed before results are released.

When enough DNA is obtained from both twins, the test is designed to determine identical versus fraternal twin status with 99.999%+ accuracy. Standard results are typically ready within 1 to 3 business days after both samples and forms enter laboratory processing.

Identical Twins and Fraternal Twins

Identical twins develop when one fertilized egg separates into two embryos. Their DNA profiles are expected to match closely across the markers used for zygosity testing.

Fraternal twins develop from two separately fertilized eggs. Genetically, they resemble other full biological siblings rather than having matching DNA profiles.

Appearance alone cannot determine zygosity reliably. Fraternal twins can look almost identical, and identical twins can develop visible differences as they grow. Separate placentas also do not rule out identical twins.

How Twin Zygosity Testing Works

The laboratory builds a DNA profile for each twin and compares the two profiles across the tested markers. Matching profiles support an identical-twin result. Genetic differences support a fraternal-twin result.

This test is for people already known to be twins from the same pregnancy. If two people are trying to learn if they share one or both biological parents, choose a sibling DNA test instead.

Standard and Multi-Location Twin Testing

  • Choose the standard twin kit when both twins can collect cheek swabs at the same location.

  • Choose the multi-location twin kit when they live at two different U.S. addresses and need separate materials linked under one case.

Both options use the same laboratory comparison. For triplets or other higher-order multiples, contact us before ordering so we can arrange the right number of participants and comparisons.

Complete the Test at Any Age

Newborns, children, teenagers, and adults can complete twin zygosity testing. There is no need to wait until the twins are older.

1. Order the standard or multi-location option.

2. Collect and label one cheek-swab sample from each twin.

3. Return both samples and the completed forms.

4. Receive the result privately by email.

Keep each twin's swabs separate and clearly labeled. This simple step helps prevent contamination and sample mix-ups.

What the Result Can Tell You

Families use zygosity testing to correct an old assumption, clarify incomplete birth records, answer a question that has continued into adulthood, or add the result to personal family records.

The test determines if the DNA comparison supports identical or fraternal twins. It does not diagnose a medical condition, predict health outcomes, determine organ-donor compatibility, or replace medical advice. A standard self-collected kit is also not a legal chain-of-custody test.

If the case involves more than two multiples, an alternative sample, or an official documentation requirement, contact My Forever DNA before ordering. We will help you choose the right way to test.

My Forever DNA does not currently ship self-collected at-home DNA test kits to New York addresses.
