Why Earwax May Be Used for Discreet DNA Testing

Most at-home relationship DNA tests use cheek swabs because they are simple, clean, non-invasive, and easy to collect. But in real life, a cheek swab is not always possible, available, or practical.

In some situations, an alternative DNA sample, such as an earwax swab, may be considered. Earwax can contain biological material that may be reviewed by the laboratory for DNA extraction, making it one possible option for discreet or non-standard DNA collection.

Important: Alternative DNA samples are never guaranteed. The success of DNA extraction depends on the quality, quantity, age, storage, cleanliness, and handling of the sample submitted.

Private Collection

Earwax may be collected at home using a clean cotton swab, making it one possible discreet option when a traditional cheek swab is not available.

Helpful for Sensitive Situations

Alternative samples may be useful when direct collection is difficult, unavailable, or requires additional privacy and guidance.

Human Guidance

My Forever DNA® provides real support, helping you understand what to collect, how to package it, and what to expect before you submit your sample.

Is Earwax a Strong Alternative DNA Sample?

Earwax is often considered one of the more useful discreet sample options because it may contain epithelial cells and biological material needed for DNA extraction. It may also have a lower risk of mixed DNA compared with personal items that are frequently touched or shared by multiple people.

Still, sample quality matters. A swab with a visible amount of earwax is more likely to be useful than a dry, barely used, old, wet, or contaminated swab. Whenever possible, submitting more than one swab may give the laboratory a better opportunity to recover usable DNA.

DNA Specialist Tip: If you are unsure whether the sample is strong enough, collect more than one swab when possible and keep each swab dry, clean, and clearly labeled.
  • Use a clean, dry cotton swab when collecting a fresh sample
  • Submit two or more swabs when possible
  • Allow each swab to fully air dry before packaging
  • Store the swab in paper, never plastic
  • Avoid moisture, lotions, oils, and surface contamination
  • Keep each participant’s sample packaged separately

How to Collect an Earwax DNA Sample

Proper collection can help protect the sample and reduce the risk of contamination. Follow these steps carefully, and only submit samples you are legally authorized to provide.

Use a clean, dry cotton swab.

Avoid touching the cotton tip with your hands so the sample has less risk of contamination.

Gently collect visible earwax.

Carefully rotate the swab to collect a visible amount of earwax. Do not insert the swab deeply or forcefully.

Collect more than one swab when possible.

Multiple swabs may increase the chance of obtaining enough viable DNA for the laboratory to review.

Let each swab air dry completely.

Moisture can damage the sample and may lead to mold, so make sure the swab is fully dry before packaging.

Place the dry swab in a paper envelope.

Do not use plastic bags or airtight plastic containers because they can trap moisture.

Clearly label the envelope.

Include the participant name or private identifier, sample type, collection date if known, and relationship role, such as Alleged Father, Child, Mother, Sibling, Grandparent, Aunt, or Uncle.

Safety note: Never insert a swab deeply into the ear canal. Collection should be gentle and non-invasive. If you have any concerns about collection, contact our team before submitting your sample.

How to Store and Ship an Earwax DNA Sample

Storage and shipping matter because alternative DNA samples can be affected by moisture, heat, bacteria, mold, and contamination. Keeping the sample dry and separated from other samples is one of the most important steps.

Do Not Store Earwax Swabs in Plastic

Plastic can trap moisture, which may cause mold or sample degradation. Once the swab is fully dry, place it in a clean paper envelope.

Label Each Sample Clearly

Your My Forever DNA® kit includes collection materials and labeled envelopes. If you are using a DIY option, use a clean paper envelope and clearly identify each sample.

  • Participant name or private identifier
  • Relationship role, such as Alleged Father, Child, Mother, Sibling, Grandparent, Aunt, or Uncle
  • Sample type, such as Earwax Swab
  • Date collected, if known
  • Separate envelope for each participant

For added privacy, you may use a private identifier instead of a full legal name, such as a first name with last initial or another clear label that helps you identify the participant.

Packaging reminder: Never combine multiple people’s samples in the same envelope. Mixed samples can make testing more difficult and may prevent the laboratory from producing a usable result.

Earwax DNA Testing FAQs

How much earwax is needed for DNA testing?

A visible amount of earwax on the swab is best. If you are unsure whether the sample is strong enough, submit multiple swabs to increase the chance of successful DNA extraction.

Can an old earwax swab be used?

Fresh samples are generally preferred. Older samples may still be submitted, but they can be more vulnerable to degradation, moisture, bacteria, mold, or contamination. The older or more exposed the sample is, the greater the chance that DNA extraction may not be successful.

What happens if the lab cannot extract enough DNA?

If the sample does not contain enough viable DNA, you will be notified. In many cases, a new or additional sample may be requested. Additional sample processing, viability, or replacement fees may apply depending on the test and sample type.

Can I use earwax from a tissue, cotton ball, or another item?

A cotton swab with visible earwax is preferred. Samples collected from tissues, cotton balls, or other surfaces may carry a higher risk of contamination, mixed DNA, or insufficient DNA.

Is earwax DNA testing legal or court-admissible?

Standard at-home DNA tests using discreet or alternative samples are for informational use only and are not intended for legal or court use. If you need court-admissible results, you must complete a legal chain-of-custody DNA test.

Do I have to create an online account to receive results?

No. My Forever DNA® does not require barcode activation or an online portal for standard at-home testing. Results are delivered privately according to the result notification form.

Where can I get help choosing the right test?

You can contact My Forever DNA® directly for support. Visit our Contact page or call 402-800-7161 for guidance before ordering.
