For comparison, standard cheek-swab DNA tests are typically completed within 1-3 business days after samples are received and accepted by the laboratory. However, because this test may use alternative or discreet DNA samples instead of standard cheek swabs for one or more participants, the samples must first go through additional review and processing within the laboratory’s advanced forensic DNA department. Alternative DNA samples may require extra handling, evaluation, and preparation before testing can be completed, which is why the turnaround time is longer than a standard cheek-swab DNA test.

Important Hair Follicle Sample Note

Hair follicle samples must contain enough usable DNA for testing to move forward. For best results, submit at least 25 hair strands with visible follicles or roots attached.

You may also send the entire hairbrush or comb, as long as you are confident it has only been used by the person being tested.

Do not send, ship, or store hair samples in a Ziploc bag, plastic bag, or airtight plastic container. Hair samples should be packaged in paper only, following the instructions provided.

The My Forever DNA® Hair Follicle Home Paternity DNA Test Kit is designed for situations where a standard cheek swab is not possible, preferred, or available from one participant.

This private at-home paternity DNA test allows one participant to provide a hair follicle sample, while the other participant provides standard cheek swabs. It is a discreet way to get paternity answers from home with clear instructions and real support from My Forever DNA® Specialists.

Step 1: Order Your Hair Follicle DNA Test Kit

After placing your order, your kit is shipped directly to you in discreet packaging with everything needed to begin the process.

Your kit includes:

• Easy-to-follow instructions
• Hair sample collection guidance
• Standard cheek swabs for the other participant
• One Results Notification Form
• Prepaid, trackable FedEx® return shipping

Step 2: Collect the Hair Follicle Sample

Submit a hair follicle sample from either the alleged father or the child.

For best results, the hair sample should include:

• At least 25 hair strands
• Visible follicles or roots attached
• Hair from only the person being tested
• A clean, dry sample handled carefully to avoid contamination

You may also send the entire hairbrush or comb, as long as you are confident it has only been used by the person being tested.

Other possible hair-related sample options may include:

• Beard trimmings
• Hair with visible root or follicle
• Razor debris
• The entire razor, if packaged safely and according to instructions

Step 3: Collect the Standard Cheek Swabs

The other participant will provide standard cheek swabs using the materials included in the kit.

Cheek swab collection is simple, painless, and can be completed from home by carefully following the instructions provided.

Step 4: Package and Return Your Samples

Package the hair follicle sample and cheek swabs according to the instructions included with your kit.

Do not send, ship, or store hair samples in a Ziploc bag, plastic bag, or airtight plastic container. Hair samples should be packaged in paper only.

Once everything is collected and completed, return your samples using the prepaid, trackable FedEx® envelope.

Step 5: The Hair Sample Is Reviewed for Viability

Before full paternity testing can begin, the laboratory must review the hair follicle or alternative hair-related sample to determine whether enough usable DNA can be recovered.

If viable DNA is recovered, the lab will move forward with paternity testing. If the sample does not contain enough usable DNA, our team will contact you to discuss your options, which may include submitting a replacement or additional sample.

Step 6: Paternity Testing Is Completed

Once viable DNA is confirmed, the laboratory compares the child’s DNA profile to the alleged father’s DNA profile.

Testing is performed by a trusted U.S.-based AABB-accredited and CAP-certified laboratory partner using:

Hair follicle and alternative hair-related samples are not guaranteed to contain usable DNA. Sample success depends on the quality, condition, age, handling, storage, and viability of the sample provided.

Viability testing fees are non-refundable because the laboratory must attempt to recover DNA from the sample, even if enough DNA cannot be extracted for full paternity testing.
