How the Hair Follicle Paternity DNA Test Works

  1. Collect hair: Submit at least 25 hair strands with visible follicles or roots attached. A hairbrush may be used only if it contains hair from the person being tested. Never store, ship, or send hair in plastic or zip-lock bags. Paper only.
  2. Collect the cheek swab: The other participant provides a simple cheek swab.
  3. Return samples: Send samples and forms back using the prepaid FedEx return envelope.
  4. Lab review: Hair samples require a viability review before full comparison testing.
  5. Receive results: Results are emailed within 5 to 7 business days after samples are received, accepted, deemed viable, and placed into processing.

Alternative DNA samples may require extra handling, evaluation, and preparation before testing can be completed, which is why the turnaround time is longer than a standard cheek-swab DNA test.
