For comparison, standard cheek-swab DNA tests are typically completed within 1-3 business days after samples are received and accepted by the laboratory. However, because this test may use alternative or discreet DNA samples instead of standard cheek swabs for one or more participants, the samples must first go through additional review and processing within the laboratory’s advanced forensic DNA department. Alternative DNA samples may require extra handling, evaluation, and preparation before testing can be completed, which is why the turnaround time is longer than a standard cheek-swab DNA test.

How Our Discreet Toothbrush At-Home Paternity DNA Test Works

The My Forever DNA® Discreet Toothbrush At-Home Paternity DNA Test is designed for situations where a traditional cheek swab is not possible, preferred, or available from one participant.

This private at-home paternity DNA test allows one participant to provide a used toothbrush as the DNA sample, while the other participant provides standard cheek swabs. It is a discreet, flexible way to get answers without needing to request a traditional DNA test.

Toothbrush Sample Requirements

For best results, the toothbrush should:

• Be used by only one person
• Have been used at least 20–30 times
• Be completely dry before packaging
• Be handled carefully to avoid contamination
• Be packaged exactly as instructed

The toothbrush must contain enough usable DNA for testing to move forward.

Step 1: Order Your Discreet Toothbrush DNA Test Kit

After placing your order, your kit is shipped directly to you in plain, discreet packaging, typically within 1 business day.

Step 2: Collect Your DNA Samples

Submit one used toothbrush from either the alleged father or the child. The other participant will provide standard cheek swabs using the materials included in the kit.

Carefully follow the collection and packaging instructions to help protect the sample and improve the chance of recovering usable DNA.

Step 3: Return Your Samples to the Lab

Use the prepaid, trackable FedEx® return envelope to send your samples securely to the laboratory.

Testing is performed through a trusted U.S.-based AABB-accredited and CAP-certified laboratory partner specializing in advanced forensic DNA testing.

Step 4: The Toothbrush Sample Is Reviewed for Viability

Before paternity testing can be completed, the toothbrush sample must be reviewed to confirm whether enough viable DNA can be recovered.

If usable DNA is found, the laboratory moves forward with paternity testing. If the sample does not contain enough usable DNA, our team will contact you to discuss your options.

Step 5: Paternity Testing Is Completed

Once viable DNA is confirmed, the lab compares the child’s DNA profile to the alleged father’s DNA profile.

Testing includes:

Important Note About Toothbrush DNA Samples

Toothbrush samples are alternative DNA samples and are not guaranteed to contain usable DNA. Viability testing fees are non-refundable because the laboratory must attempt to recover DNA from the sample provided, even if enough DNA cannot be extracted for full paternity testing.

The quality of the toothbrush sample, how often it was used, how it was stored, and how it was handled can all affect whether DNA can be recovered.

For best results, submit a fresh, dry toothbrush that has been used regularly by only one person. Do not send, ship, or store the toothbrush in a Ziploc bag, plastic bag, or airtight plastic container, as this may affect the quality of the sample.
