What a multi-location sibling DNA test does
A sibling DNA test compares genetic markers between two people who might be siblings and determines one of three outcomes:
-
Full siblings (both share the same biological mother and the same biological father).
-
Half siblings (both share one biological parent, either the mother or the father).
-
Not biologically related as siblings.
The multi-location configuration ships one kit to each possible sibling at their separate addresses. Each collects cheek swabs at home and mails samples back independently. Because sibling DNA testing doesn't require the parents to be present, this is often the only realistic route when the possible siblings are adults living in different regions and the biological parents can't or won't participate.
When to test siblings from separate locations
-
Two adults living in different states or countries who suspect they share a biological parent.
-
An adoptee who has identified a possible sibling through records, ancestry services, or family connections and lives in a different location.
-
Family members separated by adoption, foster care, or estrangement who want to verify a biological connection without meeting in person.
-
Reunited half or full siblings who want scientific confirmation of the relationship.
Full siblings vs. half siblings: what the result means
Full siblings share approximately 50% of their DNA. Half siblings share approximately 25%. The test measures the pattern of shared markers across an advanced multi-marker panel and calculates a likelihood ratio for each possible relationship. A strong result clearly indicates full or half siblings. A moderate result is more ambiguous. An inconclusive result usually means testing an additional relative (a possible parent, grandparent, or aunt or uncle) would strengthen the finding.
The test does not identify which parent is shared in a half-sibling result. It only indicates whether the shared-DNA pattern matches a full sibling relationship, a half sibling relationship, or neither.
