What Can a Sibling DNA Test Determine?
A sibling DNA test compares genetic markers between individuals who may share one or both biological parents. The laboratory evaluates whether the DNA evidence is most consistent with a full sibling, half sibling, or unrelated sibling relationship. A half-sibling result does not identify which biological parent is shared.
Why Include a Biological Mother’s DNA?
If the goal is to determine whether siblings may share the same biological father, maternal DNA is strongly recommended when available. It helps the laboratory account for known maternal genetic contributions and better evaluate evidence associated with a possible shared father.
Maternal DNA can be especially valuable when siblings have different biological mothers. When applicable, one biological mother’s sample may be included at no additional cost.
Sibling DNA Testing Without the Parents
A sibling DNA test without the parents can help when one or both biological parents are deceased, unavailable, unreachable, or unwilling to participate.
If a biological parent is available, a direct paternity DNA test or maternity DNA test is generally the most direct option.
46-Marker Sibling DNA Analysis
Testing analyzes 46 DNA genetic markers plus Amelogenin through our U.S.-based AABB-accredited and CAP-certified laboratory partner. Statistical analysis evaluates how strongly the DNA evidence supports the tested sibling relationship.
Some cases may benefit from another known biological relative, such as a grandparent or aunt or uncle.
Fast Sibling DNA Test Results
Cheek swabs: typically 2–3 business days after all required samples are received and accepted. Discreet samples: typically 5–7 business days after laboratory acceptance because additional forensic preparation is required.
