About At-Home Grandparent DNA Test Kit

The My Forever DNA® Grandparent At-Home DNA Test Kit helps determine whether an alleged grandparent and grandchild are biologically related - privately from home with trusted lab standards and real human support.

This test is helpful when the alleged father or mother is unavailable, deceased, unwilling, or unable to participate.

What a grandparent DNA test does

A grandparent DNA test compares genetic markers between one or two grandparents and a grandchild to determine whether they share a biological relationship. A child inherits approximately 25% of their DNA from each grandparent. The test looks at that inheritance pattern to indicate whether the tested grandparents are the child's biological grandparents through the alleged parent's side of the family.

One grandparent vs. two grandparents

When both grandparents on the alleged parent's side can be tested (paternal grandmother and paternal grandfather), results are meaningfully stronger than testing a single grandparent. Two grandparents let the lab distinguish which grandparent contributed which markers, narrowing the range of possible outcomes into a clearer likelihood. A single-grandparent test still works but the result is more likely to come back as moderate or inconclusive.

If only one grandparent is available, the test is still worth doing. If both are available, testing both is worth the small extra fee for the second grandparent's marker analysis.

When to add the mother's cheek swab

Including the biological mother's cheek swab strengthens the result significantly by letting the lab identify which side of the family the shared DNA came from. The mother's sample is optional but recommended when available. Coordinate with your specialist before shipping if you want to add her.

When to choose this test vs. an aunt or uncle test

Both grandparent and aunt or uncle testing work through the extended family when a direct paternity test isn't possible. Choose grandparent testing when the alleged father's parents are available and willing. Choose aunt or uncle testing when the grandparents aren't available but a sibling of the alleged father is. Grandparent testing is usually the stronger option when it's available, because grandparent-grandchild inheritance is more predictable than avuncular inheritance.

How accurate is a grandparent DNA test?

Testing runs through a US-based AABB-accredited and CAP-certified laboratory partner with dual processing. The lab tests 46 DNA genetic markers for grandparent testing. My Forever DNA guarantees a specific 46 DNA genetic markers on every grandparent test.

When to choose a legal DNA test instead

This kit is for informational use only. Results are not court-admissible and cannot be used in custody, child support, immigration, or estate proceedings. Legal DNA testing requires witnessed collection and photo identification. If a legal process is involved, order a legal DNA test.

Turnaround for grandparent testing

Results are typically completed and emailed within 2 to 3 business days after all samples and the completed notification form arrive at the lab and are placed into processing. Turnaround starts on the day the lab logs samples in.

Why the timeline runs longer than paternity

Grandparent testing requires an inheritance model calculation rather than a direct parent-child comparison. The extra statistical work happens inside the 2 to 3 business day window. Results are processed Monday through Friday. Weekends and holidays are outside the turnaround.

What can extend the timeline

The most common cause of delay is a swab that arrived low-DNA. With three or more samples in the case (one or both grandparents plus the grandchild, plus optionally the mother), the odds of one sample presenting a viability concern are higher than a two-person case. Your specialist contacts you before running the comparison if any sample is a concern.

One specialist for the whole case

When your samples arrive at the lab, one dedicated DNA specialist is assigned to your case. That person confirms samples arrived, coordinates any viability concerns across the multiple swabs involved, releases the report by email, and answers questions after.

What your specialist handles

  • Confirms all samples arrived and are logged in against the shared case identifier.
  • Contacts you if any swab appears low-DNA before running the comparison.
  • Coordinates adding the mother's cheek swab, the second grandparent, or an aunt or uncle if that would strengthen the result.
  • Releases the report and walks through the likelihood ratio.
  • Advises on whether testing additional relatives would help if the result is inconclusive.

How It Works

Step 1 · Order and receive the kit

Kit ships within 1 business day in plain FedEx packaging.

Step 2 · Collect cheek swabs

Each participant (grandparent plus grandchild, and optionally the mother or a second grandparent) collects two cheek swabs by rubbing each swab against the inside of the cheek for 60 seconds.

Step 3 · Air-dry the swabs

Let all swabs air-dry at room temperature for at least 30 minutes. Never seal wet swabs.

Step 4 · Package samples separately

Place each participant's dry swabs into their labeled envelope. Complete the notification form with participant identifiers.

Step 5 · Ship samples to the lab

Put everything into the prepaid FedEx return envelope. Drop at any FedEx location.

Step 6 · Lab logs samples and confirms intake

Your specialist confirms intake.

Step 7 · Grandparent comparison

The lab runs the grandparent-grandchild comparison with dual processing over 2 to 3 business days.

Step 8 · Report delivery

The full-color PDF report is emailed to the contact you specified.
