A grandparent DNA test compares genetic markers between one or two grandparents and a grandchild to determine whether they share a biological relationship. The multi-location configuration ships one kit to the grandparents' address and one to the grandchild's address, then matches the samples at the lab. This is the right fit when the grandparents live in a different state, city, or country than the grandchild.
When both grandparents on the alleged parent's side can be tested (paternal grandmother and paternal grandfather), the result is meaningfully stronger than testing only one grandparent. Two grandparents let the lab distinguish which grandparent contributed which markers, narrowing the range of possible outcomes. A single-grandparent test still works but the result is more likely to come back as moderate or inconclusive.
If only one grandparent is available, the test is still worth doing. Adding the second grandparent costs $100. Your order still includes two collection kits shipped to two addresses.
Both grandparent and aunt or uncle testing are used when a direct paternity test isn't possible. Choose the grandparent test when the alleged parent's parents are available and willing. Choose the aunt or uncle test when the grandparents aren't available but a sibling of the alleged parent is. If these relatives are unavailable, contact a DNA Specialist to discuss whether another testing setup may help.
Every order includes support from a dedicated DNA Specialist who can help with collection, returns, status updates, and guidance by email or phone.
Collecting from same location?
If both participants can collect samples together, our Standard At-Home Grandparent DNA Test Kit may be a better fit.
