What twin zygosity testing determines
A twin zygosity DNA test determines whether twins are identical (monozygotic) or fraternal (dizygotic). Identical twins come from the same fertilized egg that split during early development and share nearly identical DNA. Fraternal twins come from two separate eggs fertilized at the same time and share about 50% of their DNA, the same as any other pair of full siblings.
The multi-location configuration ships one kit to each twin at their separate addresses. This is the right choice when the twins are adults living in different cities, when one twin was placed for adoption and is testing with the reunited sibling, or when the twins simply live apart and don't want to coordinate a single collection appointment.
When zygosity testing is worth doing
-
Hospital or delivery records were unclear, missing, or conflicting, and the parents want scientific confirmation.
-
Adult twins want to confirm whether they're identical for medical planning (some genetic risks are shared between identical twins but not fraternal).
-
Adoption cases where one twin was placed with a different family and biological information was not recorded.
-
Personal curiosity about the biological relationship between the twins.
-
Discussions with a medical provider about donor matching or shared genetic risks.
How accurate is a twin zygosity test?
When cheek swabs from both twins yield viable DNA, the result is scientifically conclusive. Identical twins share essentially the same DNA at every marker location; fraternal twins share the same DNA at approximately half of the marker locations. Testing runs through a US-based AABB-accredited and CAP-certified laboratory partner with dual processing. The comparison runs at 24 DNA genetic markers with dual processing.
